For anyone who has ever read any of the self help or prosperity mindset and thinking books out there, you will have learnt that you have to visualise what results you want. Use all of your senses to live it in your mind and you will be propelled towards it. However as I learnt from the following experience, we can't try to control the results or be too attached to the outcome in all scenarios otherwise we might find out the hard way that we have refused more than we originally asked for.
I found time and time again in my life that even though you can't see the whole staircase, it is still good to take the first step. You still mightn't see the top step but you will see more than you saw before. This is the key point to finding your true prosperity in life. I would also like to you to consider this: There is no road to happiness, choose to be happy now! That's right, find as many things as possible in your life 'TODAY' to be happy about. As Robert Kiyosaki, best selling author of Rich Dad Poor Dad says 'Today is a word for winners, tomorrow is a word for losers' Yes is also in the vocabulary of winners, No is the much used word by losers. So are you choosing today to be a winner (Yes) or a loser (No)?
My second year at university, I had saved up all summer to give myself a head start to the academic year. The first week back and they announced to all 83 business degree students that they were giving 6 students the opportunity to go on a study exchange programme to Montana State University, USA. I'd never been to the USA but I'd read books about setting goals, achieving prosperity in life and thought it would be 'fun' to put that on my goal list. The fact I had done that, I knew I had to apply. I wasn't sure if I'd have enough money to go but I'd give it my best shot anyway. I was delighted when I found out only 21 applications were received and as my exam grades were in the top 6 of those 21, I was told there was a place for me if I wanted it! I didn't hesitate to accept and from that day I started making as many lists of goals I could think of.
My mum always encouraged us to work in their business with them during summer holidays and by the time I was 16, I was able to answer phones, use a shop cash register, do stock taking, work on administration work, use a photocopier and deal with a paper jam and most importantly type to name a few of my skills! In today's computer age, being able to use a QWERTY keyboard is one skill I am thankful for. At the time, I would have rather been outside with my friends playing rounders but my mum had this thing that all her children including my brother should be able to cook, type, knit (yes I was knitting sweaters at age 12) and sew. It is a basic skill set that has served me well in life and yet so many young people today, have admitted they wouldn't know how to sew a button on or fix a ripped seam! If I said I made all my own curtains for my first house, is that showing off? The point I'm making is that it's not the skill set that I have learnt that has served me well in life, its the ability to use what resources we have to solve problems. Therefore I learnt that its important to do the things we enjoy in life which are usually the things we do well and then find someone else who enjoys doing the things we don't enjoy so much. Otherwise we get overwhelmed and are on the path to burnout faster than you can say 'high blood pressure'!
You may have heard the saying that 'Sometimes your miss is your mercy' Meaning that something you perceive as a missed opportunity wasn't so, it wasn't meant for you at all. This was the case when I started university. My parents were preparing my sister and I to run the business with them until they retired. When it came to choosing university or work, my mum agreed even though she never went on to study after 16, it was something I should do to learn more about business. The first year I was there, a major player in their industry sector from England decided to take on the Irish market by business acquisition. Therefore any business with a healthy market share was approached to either sell out or go under trying to compete. My parents were fortunate enough to get a good price for their business and signed a contract to say they wouldn't go into that market for another 5 years. Suddenly I had free reign in my life, I could go any direction I wanted ... I didn't know what I wanted though. I'd never been in this position before.
I'm delighted to say that just eight months after initially meeting, James was able to hand in his resignation and leave his job. He told me that day that he felt like a new man. That was over 3 years ago and if I had a tenner for every email and text that he has thanked me in, I would have another great stream of revenue. The main point to note is that if we'd both been hung up on having a relationship, I wouldn't have learnt how all my knowledge could make a difference to just one person's life and James would still be unhappy working in the bank and not putting his business acumen to good use either.
